The MSU Herbarium is a collection of over half a million preserved botanical specimens from around the world with a significant number of collections representing the Great Lakes Area. Our mission is to document plant biodiversity, increase awareness of the natural world, and serve as stewards for plant communities.  We are an important resource for research, education, and conservation for botanists, who seek to describe the diversity in plant species, their form, their habitats, and their ecology. Additionally, our collection is used by classroom instructors, providing reference material when live plants are not available. Our efforts seek to advance student learning, public outreach, and a broader understanding of the plant and fungal heritage of Michigan and the world.
